The Northern Michigan men's basketball team faced a challenging match against Grand Valley State Lakers, resulting in a 92-77 defeat in the GLIAC semifinals. The game took place at the Berry Events Center, with the Lakers securing their spot in the championship scheduled for tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Northern Michigan started the game on a strong note, leading by ten points with a score of 31-21 at the halfway mark of the first half. Despite Grand Valley closing the gap several times, Northern managed to lead 49-43 at halftime. Both teams showed strong offensive capabilities, with shooting percentages over 50% in the first half; NMU shot 21-36 while GV shot 15-30.
In the second half, Grand Valley intensified their performance, shooting 16-26 (61.5%) compared to Northern's 10-30 (33.3%). Additionally, Northern struggled from beyond the arc with only 2-12 (16.7%) compared to Grand Valley's efficient 5-8 (62.5%).
The Wildcats found themselves trailing behind as Grand Valley outscored them by a significant margin of 50-28 in the second half. Although NMU was close at one point, trailing just three points behind at 78-75 with four minutes remaining, a decisive 10-point run by Grand Valley sealed their victory.
Max Weisbrod led Northern Michigan with a personal contribution of 24 points. Teammates Brian Parzych and Sam Schultz each added another 13 points to their team's total score. For Grand Valley, William Dunn came off the bench to score an impressive 24 points including five successful three-pointers out of seven attempts. Britain Harris achieved a double-double with his contribution of 20 points and securing 13 rebounds.
Looking ahead, Northern Michigan awaits their NCAA Tournament fate which will be revealed during the NCAA Selection Show scheduled for Sunday night at NCAA.com.
