Northern Michigan University's men's basketball team faced a tough defeat against Grand Valley State University, losing 106-99 in double overtime at the Berry Events Center. The Wildcats, who now hold a record of 20-9 overall and 13-4 in their conference, fought hard but ultimately fell short to the Lakers, whose record improved to 13-14 overall and 10-7 in conference play.

The game was closely contested, with GVSU maintaining the lead for most of the match. However, NMU's Max Weisbrod managed to send the game into overtime with a crucial jump shot with just 11 seconds remaining, tying the score at 81. In the first overtime period, NMU took an early lead thanks to five free throws and a Dylan Kuehl dunk. Despite this advantage, three successful three-point shots from GVSU forced a second overtime.

During the second extra session, GVSU took control early on. With Weisbrod fouled out and fatigue setting in for NMU, the Lakers secured their victory. Weisbrod led his team with 27 points and made all 13 of his free throw attempts without missing once. Sam Schultz also contributed significantly with a double-double performance of 15 points and 14 rebounds. On the other side, Britain Harris scored 24 points while Marius Grazulis added another 22 for GVSU.

GVSU's success from beyond the arc played a key role throughout the game as they started strong by making four out of five three-point attempts early on. This helped them establish an early lead over NMU which they maintained through much of the contest despite Northern Michigan's efforts to close gaps.

As both teams prepare for their next games, NMU will aim to clinch the GLIAC regular season title when they face Davenport on March 2nd at home.
