NMU athletics achieve multiple successes across various sports over weekend

The past weekend saw significant achievements for Northern Michigan University's athletic teams across various sports. Both the men's and women's basketball teams secured spots in the NCAA Division II Tournament. The women's team, seeded fourth, will face Kentucky Wesleyan on March 15 in Allendale, Michigan. This marks their first tournament appearance since 2019. Key players include Makaylee Kuhn, named to the All-GLIAC First-Team for the fourth consecutive year, Ana Rhude on the GLIAC All-Defensive Team for a second straight season, and Jacy Weisbrod on the All-GLIAC Second-Team.

The men's basketball team also earned a No. 4 seed and will play Ferris State on March 16 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Coach Matt Majkrzak was recognized as GLIAC Coach of the Year. Max Weisbrod received GLIAC Player of the Year honors and was named to the All-GLIAC First Team alongside Dylan Kuehl.

In hockey, NMU's season concluded with losses at Mankato. Josh Zinger made it to the All-CCHA Second Team while Andre Ghantous tied an all-time program record with 170 career games played.

At the USCSA Nationals in alpine skiing, NMU women placed second and men fourth among over 20 teams each gender. Reagan Olli achieved First-Team All-American status in slalom and Second-Team in giant slalom.

Track and field athlete Ellyse Wolfrath competed at NCAA Championships finishing 12th in 60m hurdles earning her a Second-Team All-American title.

In wrestling at National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships (NCWWC), NMU finished 28th out of 49 teams with notable performances from Alissa Caltagirone and Marisa Angelos.

Nordic ski athletes participated in NCAA Skiing Championships where NMU ranked 18th out of 23 schools.

The lacrosse team improved its record to 7-2 after winning two out of three matches during the week with Minnie Bittell being named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week.

Golfers opened their spring season at Sea Trail Intercollegiate; women’s team finished second while men’s team placed sixth overall led by Alyssa Yaggie and Eric Yun respectively.
