The Northern Michigan University men's basketball team, holding a record of 22-10, is set to face Ferris State in the NCAA Tournament Round of 64. The matchup is scheduled for Saturday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m. in Indianapolis. This game marks the second consecutive year that Northern Michigan has reached this stage of the tournament.
Northern Michigan previously participated in last year's tournament, where they defeated Hillsdale before being eliminated by McKendree in the Round of 32. Their upcoming opponent, Ferris State, comes off a GLIAC Tournament championship victory.
Coach Matt Majkrzak commented on facing a familiar opponent: "Playing a familiar team, we know what they're doing, they know what we're doing, and it's going to come down to who steps up and who makes plays."
In their recent outing, Northern Michigan lost to Grand Valley State Lakers with a score of 92-77 during the GLIAC semifinals. Max Weisbrod led his team with 24 points. Meanwhile, Grand Valley's William Dunn contributed significantly with 24 points from the bench.
Weisbrod has been named GLIAC Player of the Year and was selected for the GLIAC First Team this season. He is recognized as only the fourth Wildcat to earn this title since Cory Brathol in 2000.
Coach Matt Majkrzak also received accolades as he was named GLIAC Coach of the Year after guiding his team to their first regular-season title since 1992-93. His leadership resulted in tying a program record for longest winning streak at thirteen games earlier this season.
Ferris State Bulldogs enter this contest with an impressive record of 25-7 after clinching their conference championship title recently against Wayne State with Vejas Grazulis earning MVP honors for his performance throughout those matches.
