Grand Valley State defeats Northern Michigan in straight sets

The Northern Michigan University Volleyball team faced Grand Valley State University in a competitive match on their road trip. The Wildcats were defeated in three sets by the Lakers, who are ranked second in the GLIAC. The scores for the sets were 25-22, 25-20, and an overtime set of 28-26.

Jacqueline Smith led with 17 kills from 49 attempts, alongside two aces, two total blocks, and four digs. Evynn Layshock followed with eight kills, while Meghan Meyer added six. Allie Barlow contributed significantly with 30 assists and one ace.

Despite having more attacks (126-118), the Wildcats could not surpass the Lakers' superior hitting percentage (0.220 to 0.087), kills (46-36), and total points (78-68). The loss leaves the Wildcats at an overall record of 8-15 and a conference record of 5-7. Meanwhile, the Lakers improved to an overall record of 18-3 and a conference record of 10-2.

In Set One, Grand Valley took an early lead with effective serves and kills. Despite efforts from Northern's players like Rayne Thompson and Meghan Meyer, Grand Valley maintained control and won the set 25-22 after a late timeout.

Set Two saw both teams exchanging points initially until Grand Valley extended their lead. Jacqueline Smith's efforts helped close the gap slightly but ultimately fell short as Grand Valley secured a win at 25-20.

During Set Three, Northern started strong but eventually lost momentum as Grand Valley caught up. The Wildcats managed to tie the set at 25-25 but could not clinch it as Grand Valley claimed victory with a final score of 28-26.

Northern Michigan University will next face Davenport on Saturday, October 28 at 4 p.m., marking their last regular season matchup.
