Maya Hunter, a golfer competing in the NCAA East Regional tournament in Carmel, Indiana, made significant progress during the second round of play. After a challenging first round, Hunter improved her position by 28 spots to tie for 23rd place as she heads into the third round.
Rebecca Vestman from Wayne State surpassed Hunter's advancement by moving up 33 positions to tie for 11th place with a score of +9 for the week. Erin Mulcahy and Mary Kelly Mulcahy from Findlay are leading individually with scores of +1 and +3, respectively.
The course conditions were slightly more favorable today, with an average score of 80.19 compared to yesterday's 81.25. Hunter recorded a second-round score of 74 (+2), improving by nine strokes from her initial round score of 83. Her performance included six birdies and six pars, marking it as the fifth-best score of the day.
Hunter began her round on the back nine but faced early challenges with a triple-bogey on her opening hole and bogeys on holes 13 and 14. Despite these setbacks, she recovered by scoring birdies on holes 15 and 18, finishing the back nine at +4 (40).
Her performance improved significantly on the front nine where she achieved four birdies and three pars, resulting in a -2 (34) score for that section. Her birdies were recorded on holes three, five, seven, and nine—the latter being noted as particularly difficult with only three birdies recorded throughout the day.
Hunter's achievements placed her among the top performers in par-five scoring and total birdies for this event. She has played par fives at -2 overall and ranks second in total birdies with eight so far this week.
"Maya was better off the tee today and capitalized on some great approaches," said coach Ben Johnson. "She put herself in a great position and has some great momentum going into Wednesday's final round."
Hunter is set to complete her participation in the tournament tomorrow with her final round scheduled to begin at 10 AM.
