Led by Maya Hunter's impressive second round score of 71, the Northern Michigan University (NMU) women's golf team advanced three positions to finish eighth out of 14 teams at the SVSU Invitational. This performance ties Hunter's previous best from the NCAA II East Regionals, marking it as one of the top rounds in NMU women's golf history.
The Wildcats significantly improved their game on Sunday, reducing their first-round score by 27 strokes to achieve a second-round score of +24 (312), which was the best among all teams in that round. Overall, they scored +75 with rounds of 339 and 312, totaling 651. They finished four strokes behind Trevecca Nazarene University and one stroke ahead of Northwood.
Throughout the weekend, NMU tackled par-3 holes at +30 (3.75 average), par-4 holes at +58 (4.58 average), and performed fourth-best on par-5 holes at +18 (5.45). The team collectively made 83 pars and seven birdies.
Maya Hunter emerged as a standout player, achieving the lowest individual round score over both days with her second-round -1 (71), placing her tied for tenth overall at +12 for the weekend. Her comeback on Sunday included three birdies and 13 pars, contrasting her first day without any birdies.
Alyssa Yaggie followed with a total score of +19 (81, 82 - 163), securing T35. She ranked second on the team in par-four scoring (4.45 average) and total pars (19). Maggie Pietila (+21: 87, 78 - 165) and Hailey Bolander (+23: 86, 81 - 167) both improved significantly in their second rounds, climbing several spots on the leaderboard.
Payton Donnelly (+31: 89, 86 - 175) completed NMU's team effort while Payton Dube (+33: 86 ,91 -177) participated as an individual competitor.
Looking ahead, NMU will compete again in Kentucky at the Klash in Kentucky event held at Perry Park Golf Resort from March 23 to March 24.
