Alpena Community College has been awarded a state grant to fund a solar project on its campus. The college received $4.6 million from the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) to support this initiative.
State Representative Cam Cavitt, R-Cheboygan, expressed his support for the college's achievement. He stated, “I couldn’t be prouder of Alpena Community College for leading the way and securing this investment for our community.” Cavitt highlighted that despite challenges, local efforts can bring state funding to Northeast Michigan.
The grant will finance a 6-acre solar array and a solar learning laboratory at the college. This "Farming the Sun" project aims to provide energy and enhance student learning experiences. It is part of Alpena Community College's strategy to prepare students for careers in competitive industries by offering thorough training in electrical systems.
Cavitt emphasized the importance of this funding beyond just financial support. “This is about more than just funding. It’s about ensuring that our students have the tools and opportunities they need to succeed in today’s rapidly changing economy,” he said.
Cavitt also commended the leadership at Alpena Community College, including President Don MacMaster and the board, for their dedication to expanding opportunities for students and the community. “Dr. Don MacMaster and his team have done an incredible job keeping ACC at the forefront of education and workforce development in Michigan,” Cavitt remarked.
With this new funding, Alpena Community College aims to strengthen its role as an innovation hub in Northeast Michigan, showing that local communities can achieve significant progress despite political obstacles.
