Wildcats to face top rivals Grand Valley State Lakers and Davenport Panthers

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University women's soccer team, with a 2-1-1 overall record, returns home for two key matchups. They will host the No. 1 Grand Valley State Lakers on Friday, September 20, and the Davenport University Panthers on Sunday, September 22.

These are important league games for the Wildcats, who are currently positioned fifth in the GLIAC standings. Grand Valley State is leading the table, while Davenport holds the fourth spot.

The last time the Wildcats faced the Lakers and Panthers, they had a successful weekend, securing victories in both matches. They defeated the Panthers 2-0 and edged out the Lakers 1-0.

The Wildcats return home for their first home games of the season. Last year they were 9-1-3 at home; since Jon Sandoval took over as coach, they have an impressive record of 28-2-7 on home turf.

Justina L'Esperance leads the team and is second in the GLIAC with three goals and seven points and is currently riding a two-game goal streak. L'Esperance also leads the GLIAC in shots on goal (8). Angelina Perritano is second in the GLIAC and first on the team in assists with two. The Wildcats currently lead the GLIAC in goals (11), assists (7), points (29), goals per game (2.750), and shots (70).

The Lakers head into this weekend with a 3-0-1 record and are nationally ranked No. 1. Their recent results include a tie against Northwestern Missouri State and a win over Central Missouri. In their match against Northwestern Missouri State, Alli French scored her first goal of the season for the Lakers resulting in a tie. Two Lakers accrued goals against Central Missouri: Emma Chudik and Alli French resulted in a 2-1 win.

The Panthers enter this weekend's matches with a 2-1-1 overall record after starting their season with consecutive wins against Truman State and Quincy. In their most recent match against Cedarville, Taylor Meadows scored her first goal as a Panther though it ended in a 2-1 loss. Prior to that game, they faced Northwood resulting in a 1-1 tie.
