The City of Traverse City has announced the commencement of the Veterans Drive Reconstruction Project, with work scheduled to begin on July 22, 2024. The project will span Veterans Drive from Fourteenth Street to just south of Fairlane Drive and is expected to be completed by mid-October, weather permitting.

City Engineer Anne Pagano expressed optimism about the project's impact: "We are pleased to begin the much-needed reconstruction of Veterans Drive, incorporating improved stormwater solutions and enhanced mobility features. We are grateful that our MPO status has enabled the City to secure the necessary funding for this important project."

During construction, Veterans Drive will be closed to through traffic, though access for residents and businesses in the affected area will be maintained. Detoured routes will be clearly marked. Commuters are encouraged to use alternate routes to minimize congestion and ensure worker safety.

Funding for the project comes from multiple sources. The regional Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) selected it for funding support, with federal and MDOT contributions amounting to $1,127,594. Additionally, the City will provide $682,646.89 from its Road Fund and $466,030.00 from its Water Fund. A 10% contingency fund has been set at $212,627.09. There is also a requirement for field management and construction testing tied to federal funding totaling $116,595.00.
