The City of Traverse City invites residents to an open house on July 18th, from noon to 8 p.m. at the Governmental Center, to review and discuss the City's draft Master Plan and Mobility Action Plan. This event provides an opportunity for community members to engage with the future vision of the City, offering their insights and feedback.
In 2022, the City initiated the process to rewrite the Master Plan and formulate a Mobility Action Plan. After several months in 2022 and 2023 of active public engagement, both plans have been drafted.
A Master Plan is a long-range policy document used by elected and appointed community leaders to guide land-use decisions, including those related to transportation, development, housing, recreation, natural resources, arts and culture, and the economy.
As part of the Master Plan process, the City has been working to develop a Mobility Action Plan. This strategic document outlines measures and strategies designed to improve transportation and mobility. The plan addresses various transportation challenges and promotes more sustainable, efficient, and accessible transportation systems. These plans are crucial for addressing urban congestion issues, environmental concerns, and enhancing residents' quality of life.
The draft Master Plan and draft Mobility Action Plan are informed by data, land-use planning best practices, and community input. Both drafts will be reviewed as one document.
“We are pleased to present the draft Master Plan to the community. We encourage residents to participate in this open house, whether to ask questions, share ideas or simply learn more about the role of a Master Plan in guiding future planning in our community. Your input is essential in developing a successful document that shapes vibrant and sustainable future for the City of Traverse City,” stated Planning Director Shawn Winter.
The open house format will be informal so residents may arrive and engage at their convenience. Throughout the event, staff members, consultants, planning commissioners, and leadership team members will be available to answer questions and facilitate discussions.
