LANSING, Mich. — The Senate Committee on Appropriations, led by Sen. John Damoose, has approved the 2024 recommendations for the Natural Resources Trust Fund (NRTF) development and acquisition projects. Damoose, representing R-Harbor Springs, emphasized the importance of the NRTF in securing and protecting Michigan's natural resources, stating, “The Natural Resources Trust Fund helps secure and protect Michigan’s one-of-a-kind natural resources.”

In discussing the impact of the approved projects, Damoose highlighted the benefits for Michigan families, saying, “Whether it’s fishing, hiking, boating, or anything else, many Michigan families enjoy spending time outside in nature and these projects improve access to our outstanding recreational opportunities and help make Michigan an even better place for residents to enjoy the outdoors.”

The NRTF, which is funded by interest earnings from the development of state-owned mineral rights, allocates its resources towards recreation improvements and land acquisitions. The approved recommendations include significant funding for both recreation development projects and land acquisition projects across the state.

Among the projects approved in Damoose’s district are initiatives in Cheboygan County, including the acquisition of Doe Lake and surrounding wetlands as well as the acquisition of Black River Ranch. These acquisitions aim to enhance forest management, outdoor recreation, and environmental protection in the area.

Furthermore, an amendment sponsored by Damoose to utilize private funds for the Straits State Park interpretive project was also approved. This project, supported by the Mellon Foundation, will focus on developing the west unit of Straits State Park to celebrate the stories and heritage of the Anishinaabe people and Father Jacques Marquette. Damoose expressed his personal connection to the project, stating, “My family loves to camp at Straits State Park. For those of us who have been there, we know this is a beautiful area that truly highlights and exemplifies the term ‘Pure Michigan.’”

In explaining the purpose of the amendment, Damoose clarified, “My amendment simply authorizes the use of private funds to provide educational opportunities and pay homage to the native community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.”

The collaborative efforts of various tribal and community partners underscore the significance of the Straits State Park interpretive project in honoring Michigan's history and natural heritage.

Senator John Damoose's commitment to enhancing Michigan's outdoor recreational opportunities and preserving its natural beauty through the NRTF projects reflects a dedication to the state's environmental stewardship and public enjoyment of its resources.
