Washington - U.S. Representative Jack Bergman (R-MI), Chairman of the Intelligence and Special Operations Subcommittee, delivered a pointed opening statement at a hearing on U.S. Special Operations Forces and Command. Bergman welcomed the witnesses and subcommittee members to the session, emphasizing the importance of addressing the challenges facing the Special Operations community.

Bergman highlighted the ongoing threats in the Middle East, stating, "As the U.S. attempts to shift its focus away from the threats in the Middle East, we are quickly learning that the threats in the Middle East have not shifted their focus away from us." He stressed the critical role of Special Operations Forces in countering terrorism and addressing violent extremist organizations amidst evolving global dynamics.

Addressing misconceptions about the role of the Special Operations Community, Bergman refuted the idea that they should take a back seat in current operations. He underscored the increased demands placed on Special Operations since 2001, noting their expanded requirements and responsibilities. Bergman expressed disappointment in the flat funding for USSOCOM, advocating for a greater investment in their capabilities given their effectiveness in operations.

"In a time of shaping and information operations, hybrid competition, partner-training, and grey-zone conflict, the Department should be looking to resource USSOCOM’s return-on-investment propositions to the greatest extent possible," Bergman stated, emphasizing the importance of maximizing the efficiency and impact of Special Operations in the context of Great Power Competition.

The hearing shed light on the strategic importance of aligning U.S. Special Operations Forces and USSOCOM with the National Defense Strategy, emphasizing the need for adequate resources to address evolving challenges and maintain a competitive edge in the global security landscape.
