State Rep. Cam Cavitt has put forth a new proposal aiming to provide Michigan residents with priority access to state parks and forests. The initiative, labeled House Bill 5597, seeks to grant residents the ability to reserve campground spots at these locations two weeks before nonresidents.
In support of the plan, Rep. Cavitt expressed his concerns about the current situation, stating, "It’s great to see so many people interested in camping in Michigan. But some of our most popular parks fill up so quickly that state residents have less than 20 minutes to get a spot before they’re gone." He emphasized the importance of recognizing the contributions of Michigan taxpayers to the upkeep of these parks, advocating for them to enjoy certain privileges when it comes to camping reservations.
Highlighting the stressful nature of securing camping spots in high-demand parks, Rep. Cavitt added, "Camping is supposed to be relaxing. Michigan families shouldn’t have to plan their vacations by huddling around a computer in December and praying for a nice campsite."
Currently, campers can make reservations up to six months in advance of their intended trips. However, data shows that by January 8, a significant portion of campsites across Michigan for the year 2024 had already been booked. Particularly popular sites like Cheboygan and Thompson Harbor state parks experience a rapid filling of spots, with many reservations being snapped up within hours of availability.
The proposed House Bill 5597 has been forwarded to the House Natural Resources Committee for further deliberation.
