State Rep. Cam Cavitt, R-Cheboygan, has emphasized the critical need for prioritizing police staffing in Michigan as the state anticipates a significant budget surplus. Cavitt highlighted the concerning trend of diminishing resources allocated to local law enforcement despite financial opportunities.

Michigan is poised to have a budget surplus exceeding $1.3 billion this year, prompting Cavitt to question the allocation of funds, stating, "You would think there has to be some money there for local law enforcement, right?" He expressed disappointment in the past decisions by Democratic leadership, noting, "We had a nearly $9 billion surplus last year. Democratic leadership still chose to decrease community law enforcement funding."

Cavitt raised alarms about the state of law enforcement in Michigan, citing a 19% decline in the number of police officers since 2001, with an additional loss of 900 officers in the last three years alone. He stressed the urgency of addressing staffing shortages and providing necessary resources, such as training and equipment, to support local law enforcement agencies effectively.

Highlighting the financial strains faced by law enforcement in small communities like Northeast Michigan, Cavitt pointed out specific challenges, including potential property tax increases to mitigate financial burdens on sheriff's offices. He also underscored the need for funding to replace aging vehicles and equipment, emphasizing the importance of reliable resources for law enforcement personnel.

Cavitt criticized the diversion of funds towards projects unrelated to law enforcement, stating, "If the state can pay for amphitheaters and swimming pools, it can afford to give law enforcement officers reliable equipment." He called for a shift in priorities, urging a focus on reinvesting in local law enforcement to ensure public safety.

In addressing the broader issues impacting recruitment and training, Cavitt advocated for empowering local communities to facilitate exams and training for law enforcement officers, rather than imposing logistical challenges. He emphasized the need for equitable distribution of resources, stating, "Our communities deserve resources just as much as anywhere else in the state."
