Rep. Jack Bergman has called on the Senate to take action on H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act, in order to address the critical situation at the southern border. Bergman emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating, “It’s long past time the Senate take up H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act, to secure our southern border and end this crisis.”
Highlighting the escalating issues at the border, including crime, fentanyl overdoses, and illegal crossings, Bergman expressed concern about the potential catastrophe if immediate action is not taken. He criticized the current border bill, which allocates only 17% of a $118 billion total to securing the border, stressing that more robust national security measures are needed.
Bergman outlined the key provisions of H.R. 2, which include restarting construction of the border wall, deploying technology to both the southern and northern borders, increasing the number of Border Patrol agents, ensuring transparency of illegal crossings, and enhancing protections for unaccompanied children from human trafficking. The bill also aims to end catch and release policies, curb executive immigration authority abuse, and streamline the asylum process.
In urging swift Senate approval of H.R. 2, Bergman underscored the importance of united action, stating, “We must all join together and demand the Senate immediately pass H.R. 2 to avoid a catastrophic point of no return.”
The call for Senate action comes in the wake of an incident where 19 illegal immigrants were apprehended in Grand Traverse County and transported to Sault Ste. Marie for processing.
The Secure the Border Act, if passed, is expected to bring significant changes to border security and immigration policies, addressing various challenges and vulnerabilities currently faced at the border.
