State Rep. Ken Borton expressed his concerns over a new state law that diminishes local control over large-scale wind and solar projects. Borton emphasized the importance of allowing local communities to make zoning decisions, stating, “Zoning decisions are meant to be made at the lowest level of government because no two municipalities are alike."
Borton, who voted against the controversial plan, highlighted the upcoming opportunities for the public to voice their opinions on the matter. He urged residents of rural Michigan to participate in the Michigan Public Service Commission's (MPSC) "engagement sessions" to ensure that zoning authority remains with local government.
The MPSC is scheduled to hold two sessions on Thursday, March 7, and Tuesday, March 19, to gather public input on the implementation of House Bill 5120, now Public Act 233 of 2023. The virtual meetings will cover various topics related to the new law, including application guidelines, fees, consultation processes, and the development of renewable energy ordinances.
Borton emphasized the significance of rural Michigan making its voice heard during these sessions, stating, “It’s essential that rural Michigan demand that zoning authority is left with local government.” Residents interested in participating can find details on how to join the meetings on the Michigan Public Service Commission's website.
