Johannesburg-Lewiston Area Schools Education: 717 students were enrolled in schools in 2022-23 school year

There were 717 students enrolled in Johannesburg-Lewiston Area Schools in the 2022-23 school year, 1.7% more than the previous year, according to the Michigan Department of Education.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2022-23 school year, 50.1% of them were boys, and 49.9% were girls.

Data also shows that most of the students were white, representing 93.2% of the Johannesburg-Lewiston Area Schools total enrollment.

Johannesburg-Lewiston Area Schools covers three schools within Otsego County with its main office in Johannesburg. Among them, Johannesburg-Lewiston Elementary/Middle School recorded the highest enrollment of 346 students in the 2022-23 school year.

Overall student enrollment in Michigan remains below pre-pandemic levels, white students experiencing the largest decline at 6.5%.

Academic performance has also suffered, with the state's average NAEP score dropping by 6.5 points and ethnic achievement gaps widening. Black and Hispanic students' average math proficiency dropped by 7% in 2022, to 13.5% and 28.2%, respectively.
