Congressman Jack Bergman | Wikipedia
Congressman Jack Bergman has reached out to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, expressing concerns and seeking clarification on the state's plans to implement and enforce the 2023 Great Lakes Fishing Decree. The Decree, approved by the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan last year, governs the allocation and management of fisheries between the state and local tribes. However, there have been apprehensions voiced by conservation groups and anglers regarding the potential harm it may cause to lake trout, whitefish, and other species in the Great Lakes.
In his letter to Governor Whitmer, Rep. Bergman acknowledges the significance of protecting Michigan Tribes' access to commercial and subsistence fishing. However, he raises concerns about the flawed and ambiguous language in the 2023 Decree that could have detrimental effects on vulnerable fish populations. Rep. Bergman emphasizes the need for the State of Michigan to take an active role in safeguarding the fisheries and the livelihoods of the thousands of Michiganders who rely on healthy fish populations.
The letter specifically requests information on the state's plans to enforce the Decree's harvest limits, engage with local communities and organizations, and address the limitations of the Decree's information sharing system. Rep. Bergman emphasizes the importance of having clear plans in place to address these concerns, given that the Decree will govern resource allocation for the next 24 years. Failure to do so, warns Rep. Bergman, could have severe consequences for the health of Great Lakes fisheries and the well-being of local communities, their tourism, economies, and heritage.
