State Representative Ken Borton paid tribute to the late former State Representative John Gernaat, who served in the Michigan House from 1991 to 1999, by introducing a memorial resolution. Gernaat, who passed away at the age of 84 last fall, was remembered for his dedication to public service and his positive and caring demeanor.

During a House floor speech, Rep. Borton spoke fondly of Gernaat, stating that he was "well-loved by many people and sought out ways to help others." He highlighted Gernaat's cheerful and friendly nature, stating that others appreciated his kind and caring demeanor. Rep. Borton also mentioned Gernaat's winning smile, which never failed to brighten people's day, and described his positivity as contagious.

Gernaat, along with his wife Karen, was a lifelong resident of McBain, MI. He was a graduate of Davenport College and went on to become an agricultural loan officer and vice president at Chemical Bank. Gernaat's dedication to farming was evident throughout his life, as he continued to work on the family dairy farm until the very end. He represented the agricultural community in various capacities, including serving on the House Agriculture Committee during his time in the Legislature. Gernaat's contributions to the community were recognized when he was named Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Farm Bureau.

Gernaat leaves behind a loving family, including his wife of 62 years, four children, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His legacy as a dedicated public servant and a caring individual will be remembered by all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
