Rep. Cam Cavitt, along with 19 other House Republicans, has urged Speaker Joe Tate to direct the House Ethics and Oversight Committee to investigate the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA). This comes after recent findings by the Auditor General revealed suspected fraudulent payments totaling over $5.6 billion.

In a letter delivered to Speaker Tate, Cavitt emphasized the need for immediate action to address the widespread fraud uncovered by the Auditor General. Referring to House Rule 36, which mandates the Oversight Committee to review such reports, Cavitt wrote, "This level of fraud demands attention. Reforms must be made to prevent future fraud, hold bad actors accountable, and protect the funds workers and businesses pay into the system."

The nonpartisan Office of the Auditor General had conducted its fifth and final audit of the UIA, in response to allegations of fraud during the COVID-19 pandemic. The December report revealed an additional $245.1 million in improper payments made by the UIA to individuals who were already deemed ineligible by the department.
