On September 8, 2023, Congressman John Moolenaar introduced legislation to designate the week of September 11 through September 17 as Patriot Week. The bipartisan legislation has been introduced in years past and has been led in the U.S. Senate by Senator Gary Peters (D-MI).
"I am proud to introduce legislation honoring the founding principles of our nation, the Constitution, and the victims of the horrific terrorist attacks on 9/11. Patriot Week provides a reminder for all Americans to learn more about our nation’s history and to celebrate the freedoms we have today," said Moolenaar.
Patriot Week was founded in 2009 by Judge Michael Warren of Oakland County, and his daughter Leah, with the goal of promoting public awareness of the nation’s founding documents and key people in the nation’s history. The week begins on the anniversary of the tragic 2001 terrorist attacks and ends on Constitution Day, the anniversary of when delegates to the 1787 Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia signed the Constitution.
