The City of Rockford is happy to announce we have hired a new Fire Chief. Fire Chief Ron Tennant started working for the City on January 3, 2023 and will be officially sworn in at the February 13 City Council Meeting.
Chief Tennant is a 40-year veteran of the fire service, having begun his career as a volunteer with the North Muskegon Fire Department in 1983. He has also been a member of the Egelston Township, Muskegon Township and Algoma Township Fire Departments. He was hired in 1985 by the City of Grand Rapids Fire Department, rising through the fire suppression ranks as well as two different assignments to the Fire Training Division. He retired in May of 2022 as the Deputy Fire Chief of Support Services.
Chief Tennant currently services as the Co-Chair of the Governors Traffic Safety Advisory Commission Traffic Incident Management Action Team. He does contract work as a Hazardous Materials response instructor and provides Traffic Incident Management as well as other emergency response training to responders statewide. Chief Tennant is a licensed Basic Emergency Medical Technician, EMS Instructor/Coordinator and a certified CPR and Fire Instructor.
Chief Tennant is a graduate of Lansing Community College and holds an associate degree in fire science technology. He was salutatorian of the 2018 Eastern Michigan University School of Fire Staff and Command.
Chief Tennant has been married to his wife Deb for 27 years, and is the proud father of RJ (a Grand Rapids firefighter), Kaylee and Sarah, who is one of the skilled and talented chefs at Marinades in downtown Rockford. He is a railfan, railroad modeler, and currently serves as Meetings Coordinator for the local Division 4 of the National Model Railroad Association.
