Asia-Pacific Region champion claims 40th JLWS title

The Chung Shan Junior Little League from Taichung, Chinese Taipei, captured the 40th Junior League Baseball World Series at Heritage Park on Sunday, August 21. 

Chinese Taipei, representing the Asia-Pacific International Region, defeated the United States West Region champions from the Oil Belt Little League of Corpus Christi, Texas, 7-1, in Sunday’s rain-delayed title game. 

The winners finished a perfect 5-0 in the weeklong tournament, outscoring the opposition an amazing 61-1. This marked Chinese Taipei’s seventh JLWS title in the past eight tries, and eighth overall since 2010.

The winning team was made up for Po-Hsun Yen, Shao-Chi Fang, Wei-Jie Luo, Yi-Chang Lo, Jia-Jhe Yang, Guan-Hua Chen, Yu-Te Chiu, Wei-Fan Chen, Mi-Chia Sung, Hung-Wei Wu, Chang-Ruei Chen, Yen-Cheng Chen and Weng-Pei-Hsuan He. The team was managed by Lan Wenchueh assisted by coaches Wen-Hsiao Tu and Young-Sen Lin.

During the tournament, Shao-Chi Fang had two home runs, 11 RBI, scored 13 times and batted .667; and Yu-Te Chiu had two home runs, eight RBI and batted .462. Fang pitched the championship game, tossing a six-hitter over seven innings.

Corpus Christi, Texas was a perfect 3-0 headed into the championship game after drawing a first-round bye. Texas then reeled off impressive wins over the USA West Region Hawaiian team (13-1), host Taylor North (11-4) and Clinton County, PA, the USA East Region representative (10-3)
