Four teams advance with wins in JLWS, while Taylor North is edged is extra innings

Teams from the USA West, Latin America, Asia-Pacific and USA Central regions were the big winners on Day 1 of the 40th Annual Junior League World Series. The host team from the Taylor North Little League lost its opener in extra innings and is now off until Tuesday, August 16, at 2 p.m.

The West champions from Honolulu, Hawaii, broke a 5-5 tie in the top of the eighth inning and held on for a 6-5 victory over Taylor North. The game had lead changes or was tied six times. Taylor had 12 hits and outhit Hawaii 12-9, including three each by Carson Boike and Jackson Surma. Teammate Giuliano Mannarino homered.

Cameron Thorning went 2-for-4 and Lucas Farmer was 2-for-5. 

Hawaii's Jordyn Oshiro scored three times. Nicholas Segawa earned the save and had a hit. Teammate Ace Arizumi went 2-for-4, scored once and knocked in a run. Dustin Oni Dawson went 2-for-4 and had two RBI. Hawaii plays USA Southwest regional champ Texas at 8 p.m. August 15. Taylor is off until Tuesday when the host team plays either Wisconsin or Pennsylvania.

In other Day 1 games, Latin American (Curacao) scored a run in the bottom of the fifth inning and five more in the sixth and then held on for an 11-9 victory over Canada (South Vancouver Little League, British Columbia). Latin America plays Australia at 5 p.m. August 15. 

Asia-Pacific regional champ (Chinese Taipei) defeated Europe-Africa champion Czech Republic 18-0. Chinese Taipei's next game is against the national champions of Mexico at 11 a.m. August 15. 

The USA Central champions (Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin) defeated the USA Southeast champs (South Riding, Virginia), 4-2. 

All games are being played at Heritage Park. Admission is just $5.
