The Best is In the Middle
Benzie Central Middle School track & field sends athletes to MEGASTAR Meet
Benzie Central Middle School Track and Field is sending three student-athletes to the prestigious MEGASTAR meet held at Shephard Public Schools on June 1st. This meet brings together the best middle school track & field athletes from all of the northern half of Michigan. In order for athletes to qualify for the meet, each must achieve a pre-determined qualifying standard that would place them in the top tier in their respective events. Sixth grader Avery Kelly, in her first year participating in track and field, qualified for the 3200m run with a time of 12:31.74 in her race at the Manton Invitational on April 29, as well as the 1600m run with a time of 6:08.2 at a Northwest Conference meet at Benzie Central on May 16 (13:10, 6:10 needed to qualify, respectively). Next, eighth grader Amaya Roper qualified for the High Jump at the Northwest Conference meet on May 16th with a cleared height of 4’ 8” (4’6” required to qualify). This is Amaya’s second straight year for qualifying. Finally, eighth grader Landon Harris qualified in three events. For his efforts, Landon qualified for the the 400m dash with a time of 59.63 seconds at the Mancelona Invite on May 13th, the 800m run with at time of 2:26.30 on April 29 at Manton Invitational, and finally the 1600m run on May 2nd with a time of 5:23 at a Northwest Conference meet at Kingsley (1:01.70, 2:27:00, 5:30, required to qualify, respectively). These three athletes will conclude their season at the Megastar, and all three look to continue their success on the grass next fall with Avery moving on to 7th grade and her 2nd year on the middle school cross country team, while Landon and Amaya will be entering 9th grade and moving up to the high school team .
