Monroe Police Department issued the following announcement on Mar 28.
Today, the MPD would like to highlight one of our retiree's Sgt. Richard Ohanesian and his career. Sgt. Ohanesian started his career with the MPD in 1988 and retired in 2015 after 27 years of service.
Sgt. Ohanesian was inspired to be a police officer by family friends who worked as Dearborn Police Officers and hired with the MPD with the intention of gaining experience before transferring over to Dearborn PD. Instead, Sgt. Ohanesian grew to love the Monroe community, citizens, and department and decided to stay with the MPD.
Throughout his career, Sgt. Ohanesian held many roles within the department. He worked as an undercover officer with OMNI, was a Field Training Officer, Youth Bureau Detective, Court Officer, Public Safety Officer and was then promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2006. While as a Sergeant, Sgt. Ohanesian worked as the Community Services, Administrative and Road Patrol Sergeant.
Sgt. Ohanesian noted that there are highs and lows in a law enforcement career, but people reaching out later in life to thank him for the positive impact that he had on their life makes all of the rough days worth it. One of Sgt. Ohanesian's most memorable and unique career highlights actually occurred off duty. Sgt. Ohanesian was working for OMNI at the time and during a trip to New York with his wife, they attended the filming of a David Letterman show. During the filming, David Letterman singled Sgt. Ohanesian out of the crowd for his beard, not knowing who Sgt. Ohanesian was, and offered him $300 to shave his beard. Sgt. Ohanesian took David Letterman up on his offer and shaved his beard on television. Check out a short video of the event (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN0J2gjlW9M).
In retirement, Sgt. Ohanesian and his wife have moved to Florida and enjoy their time at the beach as well as boating and fishing. Both of them enjoy spending time serving at their church and in their local community.
Thank you Sgt. Ohanesian for your dedication and service to the MPD as well as the City of Monroe and it's citizens.
