Alcona Community Schools issued the following announcement on Feb 27.
Middle and High School Parents:
Vaping - We have seen an increase in the number of students being caught with vapes. Unfortunately, we know that there are many more students that are vaping that are not being caught. Please take some time to talk with your child about the dangers of vaping and the consequences that can result. Students caught with vapes at school can face suspension and can be ticketed by the police. Resources: How to Talk to Your Kids about Vaping, Hiding in Plain Sight (video), Teen Vaping is on the Rise (video)
Tutoring - Tutoring is offered after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5pm. Mr. Erickson and Ms. Nelson are available for high school students. Ms. Birk (room 208) is available for middle school students.
Social Media - Do you know what social media your child is on? Do you know how they interact with others through social media? Does your child know what your expectations are about social media usage? Students aren’t always making the best choices when it comes to using social media. Often, we see problems originating from social media spilling over into the school day. Please take some time to remind your child about appropriate social media usage and how their actions can affect others. Resources: What is Cyberbullying?
Student Locker - Did you know that Alcona Middle/High School has a student locker available to help students who are in need of clothing, food, school supplies, and more? If your child would like to request something from the student locker, they just need to complete the Student Locker Request form.
Truancy - Parents/guardians of students who have missed a total of more than 5 days of school will receive a warning letter from the school with reminders about the importance of regular attendance, supports available for students and families, and the truancy process. If a student is absent for a total of 10 or more days, will receive an additional letter from the school, a visit from a truancy officer, and will have to attend an Truancy Action Plan meeting. Please note, at this time, we are not counting Quarantine absences in total absences. If your child needs to miss school, please contact the office by 1 pm or send a note in with your child on the day they return to school.
Behavioral Health Support - We are very lucky to have multiple counselors on site to help students who need support. If your child is struggling and you would like more information, please contact the school. We will send home a Behavioral Health Referral to get the process started.
Parent/Teacher Conferences - Spring conferences will be held on Wednesday, March 16 from 5-8 pm in the old gym.
ParentVue - ParentVUE allows parents and guardians access to their child’s assignments, grades, attendance, teacher emails, and more. If you don’t have access to your ParentVUE account, please email Shawna Boyd (boyds@alconaschools.net) or call the office (989)736-8534. There is also a ParentVUE app for smartphones.
