Alpena Public Schools will rescind the K-12 masking requirement

Centerburg

Alpena Public Schools issued the following announcement on Feb 16.

Earlier today, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued their UPDATED MASKING GUIDANCE FOR MICHIGANDERS.  Based on current conditions, MDHHS is expiring the Public Health Advisory on Masking in Indoor Public Settings, including school settings.

In their guidance, the Health Department has identified that Michigan is currently in the recovery stage of this pandemic.  As defined by the department “Recovery” means we are Post-surge with no immediate resurgence predicted.

As a part of the improving status of Covid in our state, school districts are urged to make decisions based on their local data and in conjunction with their local health department.  Our local health department has seen a significant drop in the number of reported cases reaching a five and a half month low.

As of today, masking is still required on school buses. This requirement is determined by the Federal Government agency charged with transportation safety.

Effective 4 pm February 16, 2022, Alpena Public Schools will be lifting their mask mandate for students, staff, and visitors.

Dual enrolled and early college students are still subject to the rules of the ACC campus.

We will continue to monitor and work closely with our health department.

As more information becomes available from our health departments, we will provide further clarification.
