City of Taylor issued the following announcement on Jan 25.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the nation’s foremost health care agency, is stating that Omicron's reduced severity, compared to previous variants and the perceived likelihood that individuals will eventually be infected, have contributed to a relaxation in people's mindsets. That and more in this week’s Wayne County Report.
Omicron’s reduced severity, compared to previous variants of COVID-19, has even caused some people to actively seek out the illness to "get it over with" – a practice experts have strongly warned against, according to the CDC.
Experts don't expect COVID to fully disappear in any of our lifetimes. Instead, it will eventually reach a period similar to several other illnesses, where "most people will be infected as children, possibly multiple times, and as those infections accumulate, they build up an immunity.”
Health experts generally agree that Omicron moves us closer to that stage with Covid-19. But there is a big caveat that determines how fast we'll get there – and it depends not on the current strain, but the one that comes next.
The City of Taylor (partnering with Wayne County) and the Taylor Community Library (as part of a Michigan Department of Health and Human Services pilot program) recently handed out a limited amount of free at-home, rapid COVID-19 test kits. But there are others ways to receive these free testing kits.
Using COVIDTests.gov
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer urged Michiganders to take advantage of the federal government’s free COVID-19 testing program. At-home, rapid COVID-19 tests are available for free at COVIDTests.gov, with every household eligible for four free tests that will be shipped directly to Michiganders’ homes.
COVID-19 testing in Michigan is at an all-time high and these at-home tests will provide the necessary tools directly to Michigan residents to limit barriers to testing access and empowering residents to take immediate action after receiving a test result.
There is when to use an at home test:
- If experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.
- If exposed to someone diagnosed with COVID-19 (ideally five days after exposure or after experiencing symptoms).
- Prior to or after traveling or attending a large gathering.
In addition, through another partnership between the City and the county, a COVID-19 Quality Care Free Drive Thru Testing site is open on the east side of the parking lot at the Lakes of Taylor Golf Course, 25505 Northline Road. It is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Visitors should remember that this site is a drive-thru – there is no need to enter the clubhouse area. This site offers PCR and not rapid testing results.
Take note that you should bring your health insurance card, but if you do not have health insurance, your test will still be conducted with no out of pocket cost. For further information on the Quality Care Drive Thru program, email qualitycaretesting@gmail.com or call (313) 653-5053.
