City of Taylor issued the following announcement on Jan 21.
Free at-home, rapid COVID-19 test kits will be available to uninsured Taylor residents on a first-come, first-served basis on Monday, January 24, at the Taylor Sportsplex, 13333 Telegraph Road. Staffers will begin handing them out at 10 a.m. in drive-thru fashion in the parking lot off the Superior Road entrance.
This City of Taylor-Wayne County offering has a limited supply and could run out quickly. We will be offering two kits per household. This effort is focusing on uninsured residents. You must show identification to prove you are a resident.
This is just one of many ways government agencies are addressing current COVID-19-related problems. Last weekend, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services coordinated an at-home kit handout through the Michigan Association of Libraries. Locally, in just an hour’s time, the Taylor Community Library handed out 300 kits to 83 families before the library’s allotment ran out.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer urged Michiganders to take advantage of the federal government’s free COVID-19 testing program. At-home, rapid COVID-19 tests are available for free at COVIDTests.gov, with every household eligible for four free tests that will be shipped directly to Michiganders’ homes.
“Testing in addition to getting vaccinated and wearing masks are extremely effective tools in preventing the spread of COVID-19,” said Elizabeth Hertel, director of MDHHS.
COVID-19 testing in Michigan is at an all-time high and these at-home tests will provide the necessary tools directly to Michigan residents to limit barriers to testing access and empowering residents to take immediate action after receiving a test result.
There is when to use an at home test:
- If experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.
- If exposed to someone diagnosed with COVID-19 (ideally five days after exposure or after experiencing symptoms).
- Prior to or after traveling or attending a large gathering.
In addition, through another partnership between the City and the county, a COVID-19 Quality Care Free Drive Thru Testing site is open on the east side of the parking lot at the Lakes of Taylor Golf Course, 25505 Northline Road. It is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Visitors should remember that this site is a drive-thru – there is no need to enter the clubhouse area. This site offers PCR and not rapid testing results.
Take note that you should bring your health insurance card, but if you do not have health insurance, your test will still be conducted with no out of pocket cost. For further information on the Quality Care Drive Thru program, email qualitycaretesting@gmail.com or call (313) 653-5053.
