Alpena Public Schools issued the following announcement on Dec 16.
Alpena Public Schools is aware of rumors/threats circulating on social media, specifically Tik Tok regarding December 17 as "National Shoot Up Your School Day." The threat mentions shootings, bomb threats, and other violent acts with the goal being to have the school closed for the day.
Alpena Public School Administration has been in contact with the Alpena Police Department and Michigan State Police. Neither law enforcement agency has identified a credible connection to Alpena Public Schools. Unfortunately it appears that this is just part of the disturbing Tik Tok Challenge trend.
At this time, there is no threat associated with Alpena Public Schools.
Out of an abundance of caution, our local law enforcement agencies will have an increased presence throughout the school district tomorrow.
Alpena Public Schools will continue to monitor this situation throughout the night in close partnership with our local law enforcement agencies.
Please take a moment to remind your student of the importance of speaking up when they hear something that could potentially dangerous. If someone hears or sees something that is concerning, please report it to your principal, teacher, or other trusted adult in the school system and contact your local law enforcement agency.
