Betsie Valley District Library issued the following announcement on Oct 28.
As a follow-up from our first #BatWeek post on Tuesday, here is some exciting news! Prior to acoustic monitoring, five species of bats were known to be present at the Lakeshore: the eastern red bat, hoary bat, big brown bat, little brown bat and silver-haired bat.
Acoustic monitoring since 2015 has shown that the northern long-eared bat (a federally threatened species) and the tri-colored bat (another rare and declining species impacted by white-nose syndrome) are also present at the park. An eighth species, the federally endangered Indiana bat has been recorded by acoustic monitoring software, too. It has not been verified by manual vetting in the park, so it's status here is still unknown. By continuing this program, we hope to gain more insight into the local bat populations.
