2021 Grand Rapids Art Prize

Art

Betsie Valley District Library issued the following announcement on Sept 9.

We would like to share that local artist Marie Wohadlo has entered her beautiful and thought-provoking piece, "10:23" in the 2021 Grand Rapids Art Prize.

Marie explains, "This 20-foot glass bead weaving depicts my grandparents as we were always seated in their kitchen while eating, playing Scrabble, or just looking out the window as captured on film in the 1980’s. In that regard, this piece has been decades in the making. Their profiles are woven with black opaque, clear translucent, and "iris" beads . The space between them is created with a chance system to represent stars symbolizing life events and shared memories. Each bead represents one hour of Grandma's life for a total of 785,000 beads (rounded up). The title evokes a 'Kodak moment' but, more importantly, was their street address forming a personal numerology where I believe a clock reading "10:23" is a sign from them. Whether that is true or not, this all serves as a source of centeredness, contemplation and restoration when the world seems unbearable. POST-PRODUCTION NOTE: As of late August, almost 85% of the beads represent the US Covid death tally and could reach 100% by the end of 2021."

Marie's "10:23" is on display at Monroe Community Church at 1020 Monroe NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.

Marie is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Cranbrook Academy of Art.
