Northern Michigan University issued the following announcement on Nov. 24.
The next film in the documentary series presented by the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University in partnership with WNMU-TV will celebrate Native American Heritage Month. Manoomin (Wild Rice): Ojibwe Spirit Food, which explores an important part of Anishinaabek culture in the U.P. and beyond, airs at 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27. It can also be streamed for 30 days after the broadcast on the WNMU website or Passport App.
The 2004 film by renowned sociologist and NMU professor Michael Loukinen is about wild rice in Ojibwe history and spiritual culture. It shares traditional procedures for harvesting, processing and cooking wild rice. In addition, it also delves into the ethics that industrial agriculture gene modification has on the crop and looks at the impact of river water management on the habitat for growing and cultivating wild rice.
