Sen. Wayne Schmidt (R-Traverse City) and the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation received testimony from the executive directors of SMART, CATA, BATA and Ionia Dial-a-Ride transit systems, hearing how each are keeping riders and employees safe during the pandemic.
SMART is southeast Michigan's only regional public transportation provider.
"More than ever, transit is a critical public service to get workers to jobs and help our friends and neighbors in the community get to the supplies and services they need," Robert Cramer, deputy general manager of SMART, said in a letter to his team in the SMART COVID-19 Safety Playbook. "While changing conditions will require us to adjust the amount of service and how we provide it along the way, all decisions will include a focus on the health, safety and comfort of our team and our riders."

CATA serves the greater Lansing area.
BATA, serving Leelanau and Grand Traverse counties, is committed to providing reliable and safe transportation while taking precautions to make sure its vehicles and facilities are cleaned and sanitized.
Ionia Dial-a-Ride is a shared-ride, demand-response public transportation service.
Also discussed were strategies around future funding and ridership, according to Schmidt's Facebook post.
