The Board of Commissioners in Alcona County passed a new contract for a new medical examiner with the Michigan Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine on March 4. The board also appointed Russell Bush as the new medical examiner for the county.
The Board of Commissioners terminated its contract with the previous medical examiner Amy Marker. Marker's contract was set to expire in September of this year.
Board Chairman Craig Johnston told The Alpena News that the county had "some issues and difficulties" with Marker.
Johnston also said the new contract could potentially lower medical examiner costs for the county.
“This potentially could even lower the costs to the county for our medical examiner costs,” Johnston told The Alpena News. “It all depends on how many exams would have to happen and that sort of thing."
Johnston expects communication will also be much better in the new agreement.
Marcus Atkins, who is the senior director of development with the Michigan Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine, expressed his excitement to serve the county.
“You are the first northern county that we would serve, so we’re excited about that,” Atkins told The Alpena News.
