North Central Michigan College issued the following announcement on Oct. 24

Accelerated 8-week courses, skiing and career Discovery Days coming in 2020

North Central Michigan College is implementing a series of new initiatives, each focused on student success and student engagement, beginning in Winter 2020.

Accelerated 8-week courses

Beginning in January, North Central will offer 8-week, accelerated courses in communication, English, psychology and sociology, allowing students to meet their general education requirements in half the time.  The four courses were selected because they are among the most popular courses taken during winter semester.  Students will have the flexibility to enroll in one or two courses during either eight-week structure, since both early morning and evening class times are available.

“We hope this format will be beneficial for our students who are working full time and need evening classes, as well as our students who need to take courses early to accommodate the rest of their daily schedule,” said Dr. Sara Glasgow, dean of liberal arts.

Because of the intensity of class pacing—each three-credit course meets six hours per week—only face-to-face courses are offered at this time.  North Central will consider adding more sections, additional curricular areas and possibly hybrid (face-to-face and online) courses.  The Winter 2020 course schedule is available on the college’s website, and winter registration opens October 30.

Club Ski Team

Students are now able to take advantage of an opportunity to participate as a member of the NCMC competitive ski team.  The college is sponsoring a Race League for one evening each week at Nubs Nob Ski Area. The emphasis is on league improvement throughout the season, so no prior training is necessary.  All participants must be at least 18 years old.

North Central is taking this club approach as an entry point to providing competitive skiing at the collegiate level.  Additionally, this will allow for involvement at various levels and afford students the ability to enjoy—and benefit from—continued participation in a competitive athletic team.

“We are pleased to introduce club athletics at North Central as another step in bolstering the student life experience on campus,” said Dr. David Roland Finley, North Central’s president.  “These extracurricular opportunities will complement the outstanding academic programs at the college, creating a more holistic, vibrant environment for learning.”

Discovery Days

North Central will host a Discovery Days career exploration event on Friday, February 21, 2020.  The event will focus on careers in nursing and allied health, with the goal of helping students discover whether a career in the health care field suits their interests, plus the education and preparation necessary to secure employment.

The hands-on, free event will feature break-out sessions led by North Central faculty and a special guest speaker.  Lunch will be provided.  Discovery Days are open to high school juniors and older, and attendance is limited.  Pre-registration will be required.

“Discovery Days allow students to ‘try on’ different careers in a particular field to determine whether it’s the right path for them,” said Ashley Antonishen, outreach recruiter.  “It’s a great way to explore your interests without the pressure of a financial or time commitment.”

A Discovery Day event focused on sustainability is planned for April 2020.
