State Rep. Cam Cavitt, representing Cheboygan, expressed strong opposition to the mandates issued by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, stating that they will have a detrimental impact on dairy farmers. The mandates, aimed at controlling avian influenza, have raised concerns within the agricultural community, especially among dairy farmers.

Cavitt highlighted the burden these mandates place on dairy farmers, emphasizing their importance in the economy of Northeast Michigan. He pointed out that while addressing the avian flu risk is crucial, the unintended consequences on dairy production and farmers' livelihoods cannot be ignored.

The emergency order requires dairy farms to implement strict biosecurity measures, including designating a biosecurity manager, establishing secure perimeters, and enforcing rigorous cleaning and disinfection protocols for vehicles and individuals. Cavitt expressed concern over the additional responsibilities imposed on dairy farmers, who are already working long hours. He criticized the state for introducing confusing requirements with minimal notice, making it challenging for rural farmers to comply.

Cavitt revealed that dairy farmers in his district have raised serious concerns about the mandates, which were introduced abruptly. He warned that the mandates could lead to severe fines and punishments for farmers who struggle to adhere to the stringent regulations.

The apprehension among dairy farmers regarding the mandates reflects a broader sentiment of discontent within the agricultural community towards the state's approach to mitigating the risks associated with avian flu.
