Confidence in the election process has been tested in a number of states following the November general election, and Michigan is taking steps to ensure public trust at the polls.

The Michigan Senate and House oversight committees have voted to issue a subpoena to the Michigan Bureau of Elections for its records on the election process. The state was called for President-elect Joe Biden and was one of those that the Trump campaign took legal action against regarding the results.

During the oversight meeting, the Associated Press officially announced Joe Biden had been declared the winner after the state of Pennsylvania was called for the former vice president, according to MLive. In Michigan, Biden was declared the unofficial winner by more than 145,000 votes. With protesters supporting Trump asking the state to look into the election process, among claims of irregularities, legislators have taken action to shore up confidence in the process.

Sen. Curt VanderWall (R-Ludington) addressed the issues on the MiSenateGOP website.

“Government cannot operate without the trust of the people we serve,” VanderWall said, according to MiSenateGOP. “Right now, many of my constituents and many Michiganders are asking about the recent election and wanting assurance that everything was done by the book. Our responsibility as their voice in Lansing is to ensure that this election and all elections going forward are secure and that all ballots are accurately counted.”

Leading up to the election, Sen. Ed McBroom (R-Waucedah Township), chairman of the Senate Oversight Committee, said there have been multiple hearings regarding election law, processes and changes that have taken place over the course of the past year. He sees this as an opportunity to review the law and process and see the need, if any, to shore up existing procedures. VanderWall took a similar stance.

“The purpose of today’s joint House and Senate oversight committee hearing was to review current election processes and to determine what, if any, opportunities to ensure accurate and fair elections we need to pursue,” VanderWall told MiSenateGOP. “I am committed to working with my colleagues in the Senate and House, both Democrats and Republicans, to ensure fair elections in Michigan.”
