State Rep. Cam Cavitt is urging residents in Northeast Michigan to participate in upcoming meetings to provide feedback on a new state law that impacts the siting of large-scale wind and solar projects. Cavitt, who opposed the legislation, emphasized the importance of community involvement in shaping the implementation of the law.

“These meetings are some of the last steps before they start clear cutting our forests and replacing the trees with large windmills and acres of solar panels,” said Cavitt. “It’s clear they care about preserving local zoning authority. No one wants to see three governor appointees on the MPSC make decisions for our rural communities. That’s why it’s critical citizens make their voices heard at these upcoming meetings.”

The new law, known as House Bill 5120 or Public Act 233 of 2023, grants the Michigan Public Service Commission the authority to approve wind and solar projects, bypassing local control. Despite being approved along partisan lines, the MPSC is now seeking public input through "engagement sessions" to gather feedback on the implementation details of the law.

The first two sessions are scheduled for Thursday, March 7, and Tuesday, March 19, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. These virtual meetings will be hosted on Microsoft Teams, with information on how to join available on michigan.gov/mpsc. Topics of discussion will include application guidelines, fees, consultations, and the development of renewable energy ordinances.

Rep. Cavitt encourages residents to actively participate in these sessions to ensure that their concerns and perspectives are considered in the decision-making process regarding wind and solar projects in their communities.
