State Representative Cam Cavitt, a Republican from Cheboygan, has expressed his strong opposition to the new firearm laws that are set to take effect this week. In a statement, Cavitt said, "The Democrat majority forced through terrible gun legislation that I opposed at every level. Bills like these set a dangerous precedent for violating Second Amendment rights. I'm committed to undoing these dangerous policies. Our constitutional rights are the bedrock of our society, and we must hold up and honor those rights."

Cavitt's concerns stem from the updated firearm storage laws, background checks, domestic violence regulations, red flag laws, and new gun safety devices that are part of the Democrat's agenda. These laws have been passed and are now set to become law.

One of the updated firearm storage laws requires individuals to store their firearms safely if they know that a minor is likely to be present. They must either store the firearm in a locked box or container or keep it unloaded and locked with a trigger lock. Additionally, firearms can be stored in a locked motor vehicle, either inside a locked box or container or locked with a trigger lock.

The updated background checks mandate that anyone purchasing a firearm must undergo a background check. This law also prohibits family members from gifting long guns to each other without the recipient undergoing a background check.

The updated domestic violence regulations aim to protect individuals by prohibiting those convicted of certain misdemeanors from possessing firearms for at least an eight-year period.

The new red flag laws, also known as extreme risk protection order laws, allow for the seizure of firearms with a low burden of proof through a court order. While a judge is responsible for making the decision to remove firearms from a person deemed to be at risk, there may not always be a guaranteed hearing before the guns are taken away.

Lastly, the new laws include provisions for gun safety devices. These laws lower the costs of gun safety devices to make them more accessible for safe firearm storage.

As these new gun laws take effect, individuals will need to familiarize themselves with the changes and ensure compliance. The aim of these laws, according to Democrats, is to enhance public safety and prevent gun-related incidents. However, critics argue that these laws infringe upon Second Amendment rights and may not effectively address the root causes of gun violence.

The impact of these laws will be closely watched in the coming months, as both supporters and opponents assess their effectiveness and potential consequences.
